We are just 4hrs from The ferry port of Caen, and 4.5hrs from the ports of Le Havre & St Malo.

The Local Area

The House of Lavender‘ Chambres D’Hôtes is just 250 meters from the River Vienne down a local pathway, turn right and this pathway continues along the river to the village of Queaux (just a fifteen/twenty minute walk)… if you turn left you will follow the river to the bridge and either continue on to Gouex or follow the road over the bridge and on to the village of Persac.

The House of Lavender‘ is triangulated by these three very pretty villages which are placed on either side of the river.

Our own village of Queaux has a beautiful river front park and in the summer it has its own beach, life guard and children’s play area and paddling pool.

Also during July and August weekly live entertainment is available with refreshments, it’s just an ideal summer location.

Just a 3 minute drive or a 30 minute walk you will find Gouex with its Church, Bar/Restaurant, Boulangerie and Post Office, during July and August the open air swimming pool is available for your use.

If you take the bridge and cross over the Vienne you will arrive in Persac once again just a 3 minute drive or 30 minute walk, it offers a Boulangerie, Pharmacy, Tabac and a beautiful park with a fishing lake, plus a Chateau where regular exhibitions are held.

The three villages between them offer the following facilities:

  • 3 Hairdressers
  • 2 Bakers
  • 1 Butcher
  • 1 Epicure
  • 1 Tabac

  • An outdoor swimming pool (seasonal)

  • We have a local market every Friday morning at Lussac les Chateaux.

The riverside at Queaux is a lovely 20 minute walk from ‘The House of Lavender‘ along the Vienne or along the D25.

It is an ideal destination for a picnic, the riverside park is open all year round and has picnic tables/benches, a children’s play area and a campsite.

Places to visit in our area

Places like Montmorillon which is a popular and interesting destination in the south-east of the department, it’s well known as the writer’s towns and more so it is well known for its macarons, and has a museum dedicated to it.

Further south in the Vienne you have Civray with some interesting medieval buildings, a highlight amongst them being the romanesque church of Saint-Nicolas. And why not pass through Charroux on the way where you can see the impressive remains of the Abbey of Saint-Sauveur. Abbey of Saint-Sauveur.

Futuroscope in Poitiers in Poitiers is always well worth a visit, and an ideal venue for families, as is the spectacle that is ‘The Giants of the sky’ which you will find in the medieval city at Chauvigny.

If you continue eastwards you will find the impressive Saint-Savin Abbey (world heritage site). Also in the eastern Vienne you will find the very pretty village at Angles sur l’Anglin and just slightly north of Saint-Savin you will find the curious prehistoric rock carvings at the ‘Witches Rock’. As you can see there is so much to see and do nearby.

Walking, Cycling, Eating.

However, if you’re feeling more energetic, you can hike, ride or cycle on the many trails around the area, maybe even kayak down the River from ‘Moussac to Gouex’…or you could just simply enjoy the abundant local food and wine specialities this region has to offer…. Whatever your reason for being here we are sure you will be spoilt for choice.

Cycling holidays in France

France is becoming more cycle-friendly every year. More than 8000km of dedicated green ways and routes have been built for cyclists and pedestrians over the last 10 years and another 5000km are in the planning stage….so why not try the beautiful Poitou Charente region, with a stay at “The House of Lavender”.

“The House of Lavender” Chambre d’hote offers an ideal stop over/stay for cyclist who are keen to find out more about this region… Not only is this area of “The Vienne” a spectacular place to cycle around, with its beautiful countryside, river side venues and its many cycle routes, we are slapbang on the EuroVelo 3 route – perfect for cyclists.

We are also just north of the Tour de Charente route, so we’re ideal for people wanting to use the EV3 route and then link into this network, or even on to the new Flow Velo for the Dordogne.
